In elementary I was a heavy girl when compared to the rest of my class. In middle school, when it was time to play sports I had to settle for a bigger jersey number because a bigger number meant a bigger size. In high school, I was the girl that while having a conversation during lunch, would look around the cafeteria and wish that I could wear something that skinny girls did. “Thin was in”.. that was my high school motto and in my senior year (vulnerable moment ahead) I took it upon myself to limit my food intake to very small portions and would perform the unhealthy before the porcelain thrones within restroom stalls. These unhealthy habits as well as excess running continued with me throughout my first year of college until I came to learn about CrossFit. My sister suggested we go in for a trial, and after 3 days we both signed up.

Ever since my first day as a member in February 1, 2016, my life has changed. Going into the box (aka gym) became my obsession, and my goal was to lose weight. So I would go mornings and afternoons, and on top of that would do extra accessory work, everyday Monday through Saturday. When I then started looking into the sport and big names like Rich Froning, Katrin Davidsdottir, and my now role model, Camille LeBlanc Bazinet, my perspective changed from wanting to be skinny to working towards being strong and healthy.

With the help of my amazing coaches, I learned that “food is fuel” and a healthy and strong body would be achieved by fueling it with healthy foods, not by eating less and exercising more. Because of this guidance and the support of my  CFB family, I transformed from gym newbie who would insecurely wear long tights and black jackets to workout, obsessed with running and barely eating in hopes to become an extra small…. into a girl that now loves to lift heavy weights and loves to eat healthy. I am no pro or CrossFit Games athlete, but I am proud to say that I can now do pull-ups, chin-ups, handstand push ups, and double-unders. These are just a few milestones as well as back squatting 200 lbs., snatching 100 lbs, and recently completing Murph 20 minutes faster and RX instead of scaled when compared to last year.

CrossFit Brownsville has positively impacted my life, I strongly recommend everyone to join this amazing family, and I can’t wait to grow in every aspect of my life as a continuing member!
